Playing Multiple Positions
The Risk Factors to Avoid Dr. Two-Weeks

Often pitchers will be playing multiple positions during their season. How many times will a pitcher also play shortstop, catcher, or third base?

Almost all the time it seems.

Pitchers usually have decent or better arm strength so it is easy for a coach to play him at positions that his arm will benefit the team.

Coaches

Take into consideration your pitchers’ arms health. If they are removed from pitching think of putting them at a position with less throwing for a couple innings.

They can play first base, second base, outfield or designated hitter.

Careful With Pitchers Arms at Practice

Be careful not to over use the pitchers’ arms during practice the day before or after pitching especially if they pitch over two innings.

Follow USA Baseball guidelines to refrain from letting a pitcher come back in and finish a game he pitched in earlier. Although it is certainly tempting this is not good practice for arm health.

If you follow these precautions it likely will keep us from a trip to see the dreaded arm doctor: Dr. Two-weeks.
